Looking back at my sketches
17 Dec 2023
Yesterday I saw the little folder containing my sketches/paintings and decided to take a look. It really was wonderful seeing all those memories, in a way that rivals seeing old photos.
Most of those sketches are done on small postcards I bought that were made specifically to paint watercolor on. The cool thing about these postcards is that, on many of them, me and my girlfriend wrote stuff about the day in which we painted them. So it’s an extra level of nostalgia because we can have a peep into what we were thinking back then.
Anyway, since then I’ve changed to a pocket sketching journal, and it got me thinking about how in the journal I don’t have the same nostalgia of reading things about those moments. But the thing is, I can do whatever I want with the journal so I can perfectly write on the pages after I do my sketches.
The only problem now is that I don’t use my journal a lot. We’ve talked about this, about my fear of doing bad drawings, of having to plan out the drawing session, to pick the perfect moment and the perfect subject. I would like to stop that. I should always carry that journal and just draw whenever I want to. I can draw for five minutes, I can even doodle on it for thirty seconds. There’s a reason it’s called a pocket journal, and I should take advantage of that form factor.
Some food for thought.
See you tomorrow!
